Between 1974 and 1976, in the period called “Dirty War” in Mexico, 5 members of the Guzmán Cruz family were arrested and disappeared by the Mexican Government: José de Jesús Guzmán Jiménez; and his sons Amafer, Solón Adenauer, Armando and Venustiano Guzmán Cruz, originally from the P’urhépecha community of Tarejero in Zacapu, Michoacán; who were arrested by the then Federal Directorate of Security (DFS) and the Mexican Army, transferred to the XXI Military Zone in Morelia and later to Military Camp No.1, where they were interrogated, tortured and disappeared, constituting a crime against humanity and the first historical reference of forced disappearances in Michoacán.
These enforced disappearances were reported and documented before local, state, national and international bodies. To date, the case is before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) who declared the case admissible on July 12, 2013, then, on July 7, 2017, the substantive hearings were held and the case is currently awaiting the final opinion.
Almost five decades after the forced disappearance of 5 members of the Guzmán Cruz family, the relatives of the disappeared p’urhépecha, the indigenous community of Tarejero, the Supreme Indigenous Council of Michoacán (CSIM), and we the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and the Indigenous Council of Government (CIG), continue to demand memory, truth and justice, so collectively we categorically demand that the IACHR issue the substantive opinion of the family’s case. Guzmán Cruz, condemning the Mexican State for the serious crimes committed against our peoples, the P’urhépecha people and the Guzmán Cruz family.
