On Friday in Athens, as every year since 2008, a march in memory of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a teenager shot dead by police, was organised at the call of left-wing groups, trade unions and civic organisations. During the commemoration of the 16th anniversary of his death, clashes broke out between police forces and protesters in the center of Athens. Protesters and anarchists threw Molotov cocktails at riot police units, erected barricades and threw a few stones, with police responding with tear gas and stun grenades. More than 5,000 police officers were deployed, 36 people were arrested as part of preventive checks before the rally and dozens of demonstrators were arrested during the evening. Similar incidents occurred in Thessaloniki.
