On Friday January 17th, the Colombian authorities announced that they had suspended peace negotiations with the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas, a decision taken following a day of violence during which some 30 people died on the border with Venezuela. Negotiations resumed in October at the invitation of the guerrillas after a four-month freeze in talks.
