On March 25, 2025, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court definitively dismissed any appeal against Mumia Abu Jamal’s conviction. In September 2024, this court, which had already sentenced him to death in 1982, had already rejected his request without examining the new evidence of innocence. The latter corroborated the racist character shown by magistrates and judges throughout the judicial proceedings. Under pressure from the corrupt Philadelphia police and Pennsylvania political leaders, they refused to consider the request on the grounds that it was out of time, even though new evidence was only recently discovered.
Mumia was incarcerated for 29 years on death row. Twice on the verge of execution, he only owes his life to a strong mobilization throughout the world. In 2011, his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Although weakened by illness, Mumia, 71, tirelessly continues to write, study and advise prisoners in their defense. The mobilizations continue: San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose have held large protests with his eldest son Jamal. Other initiatives will take place in Philadelphia, Houston and around the world (Mexico City and Berlin). As every first Wednesday of the month, a rally will be organized on May 7 (6 p.m.) at the Place de la Concorde, near the U.S. Embassy in Paris.
