The People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of Burma, intercepted and attacked a military council patrolling a village in the Sagaing region of Burma. Bordering the Indian states of Nagaland and Manipur to the north, Kachin State, Shan State and Mandalay region to the east, Magway region to the south, and Chin State to the west, this region is considered of strategic importance by the Maoists.

It was initially reported that eight Tatmadaw soldiers, including a second lieutenant, were killed in the attack, and that two rifles and ammunition were seized.
