Philippines: Two Cops Killed in Maoist Ambush

An ambush by the New People’s Army (NPA) claimed the lives of two police officers who were driving through Bagong Silang Township in Victoria, Eastern Mindoro, on the afternoon of July 13. The presence of the government army and police in Victoria ensures the security of large-scale, destructive and hostile projects to the population. Among these are seven quarrying sites approved by the local government. A large-scale mining operation is also expected to enter the state of Victoria, following the reactivation of the mine production sharing agreement for the Mindoro nickel project. These projects will devastate thousands of hectares of land that Mangyan farmers and indigenous communities depend on for their livelihoods. The police and military typically deploy forces ahead of destructive projects to suppress people’s efforts to defend their land and natural resources.
