Collectively known as the “Santa Cruz 5”, the activists – Adelberto Silva, a consultant for the National Democratic Front (NDF) of the Philippines, Ireneo Atadero, a trade unionist, Edisel Legaspi, a farmer, Julio Lusania, a driver, and Hedda Calderon, a women’s rights defender – were acquitted by the Regional Court of First Instance in the city of Taguig on 6 August. They had been arrested nearly seven years ago on trumped-up charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives. In October 2019, Calderon was able to pay his bail. The others spent six years and ten months in detention.
