Anas al-Sharif, Other Journalists Targeted, Murdered by Zionist Attack

Palestinian journalists Anas al-Sharif and Mohammad Qraiqea, and photojournalists Mohammad Nawfal and Ibrahim Daher, were killed in a Zionist strike that targeted a tent used by the journalists in the northern Gaza Strip.

The martyred journalist, al-Sharif, had been subject to a Zionist incitement campaign accusing him of being a member of Hamas’ armed wing and carrying out rocket launching operations.

However, al-Sharif and Al Jazeera Network, whom he reported for in northern Gaza, denied such claims as completely false.

Al-Sharif subject to an extensive Zionist incitement campaign

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released a statement on July 24, 2025, saying that al-Sharif was a target of a military smear campaign.

“The IOF have made unsubstantiated claims that many of the journalists they deliberately killed in Gaza were terrorists, including four Al Jazeera staff — Hamza Al Dahdouh, Ismail Al Ghoul, Rami Al Refee, and Hossam Shabat. CPJ classifies such cases as murder,” the American non-profit explained.

237 Palestinian journalists killed by occupation

The strike on the tent housing the journalists, near al-Shifa Hospital, also injured journalist Mohammad Soboh.

Since October 7, 2023, the occupation’s relentless campaign to silence coverage of its atrocities in Gaza has claimed the lives of 237 journalists. Determined to suppress the truth about the genocide being waged against Palestinians, the occupation systematically targets those striving to document its war crimes. While Palestinian reporters risk, and often lose, their lives to bring the reality of Gaza to the world, the regime has further tightened its media blackout by banning foreign journalists from entering the Strip, except under tightly controlled, propagandistic tours escorted by its occupation forces.

Palestinian factions respond

Palestinian factions and groups condemned the strike on the Al-Jazeera journalist tent today at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, which resulted in the martyrdom of 7, including 5 journalists, among them Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Quraiqe and several photographers and cameramen. They universally decried the targeting and labeled it as a crime intended to silence the truth and conceal planned escalation.

Hamas condemned the brutal crime that “exceeds all boundaries of fascism and criminality” and mourned the journalists, who join a list of 260 journalists killed by the “Nazi occupation army in the widest targeting of journalists the world has ever witnessed.” They highlighted that Anas and Mohammed received direct, repeated threats from the IOF beforehand. Hamas warned that assassinating journalists is a prelude to a “major crime the occupation plans to commit in Gaza City” by silencing its media voice to carry out massacres far from the world’s eyes. It called on the UN Security Council and journalists worldwide to condemn the crime and take immediate action.

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine (PIJ) described the deliberate targeting as a “heinous war crime” committed by the “most brutal and criminal army in the world.” The PIJ warned the international community that the attack confirms the occupation is “preparing the stage for its upcoming crimes” by eliminating the journalists who expose them. The movement asserted that this escalation proves the occupation’s rejection of all efforts to reach a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal, holding Arab and Western governments responsible for failing to stop these atrocities.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine stated that the attack confirms “truth is a direct enemy of the occupation” and called it a full-fledged war crime. The PFLP views the assassination as a “dangerous indicator of the occupation’s intention to commit the most heinous crimes in Gaza” after eliminating media coverage. It highlighted the hypocrisy of the occupation claiming to allow foreign press into Gaza while its “blood-soaked hands” executes a local press crew whose only weapon was a “microphone and a camera.” The Front declared that international silence on such crimes constitutes a “partnership in the crime” and called on international press unions and human rights organizations to pursue accountability in international courts.

The Popular Resistance Committees in Palestine (PRC) eulogized the journalists, calling Anas al-Sharif an “icon of Palestine” whose “work exposed the zionist holocaust.” The Committees stated that the assassination exposes the lie of Netanyahu’s propaganda and proves the “zionist entity fears the word, the image, the camera, and the pen.” Pledging to continue on the path of the martyrs, the PRC affirmed that their struggle will continue until the “entity of murder, fascism, and zionist crime” is removed entirely.

Fatah al-Intifada mourned the “martyrs of truth,” stating that the targeting of journalists is a “blatant violation of human rights and freedom of the press.” The movement asserted that the primary goal of such attacks is to “blind the world to the crimes” and assassinate the witnesses documenting the “genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.” It called for international protection for media workers to ensure they can perform their duties in safety.

The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement strongly condemns the brutal assassination of several journalists by the zionist enemy near Al-Shifa Medical Complex.

The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) strongly condemned the heinous crime, noting that the assassination of Al Jazeera’s correspondents came after months of “israeli” incitement against them. The Center called for an “independent and transparent international investigation” into the continuous targeting of journalists in Gaza to ensure accountability and an end to the “policy of impunity.” It also demanded the international community provide “immediate and effective protection for Palestinian journalists.”
