10 CPI Cadres Allegedly Killed Battling Security Personnel In Gariaband District

At least 10 persons believed to be cadres of the Maoist party were killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district on Thursday, Raipur Range Inspector General of Police Amresh Mishra announced to the press today.

The IGP said Modem Balakrishna, a senior leader and Central Committee Member (CCM) of the CPI (Maoist), is among the deceased.

The firefight broke out in the forest under Mainpur police station limits when security personnel were out on an anti-Maoist operation, the IGP told the press.

According to IGP, the combing operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about the movement of leading cadres of the Maoist party in the area, located over 180 km away from the state capital Raipur.

“Personnel belonging to the Special Task Force (STF – a unit of the Chhattisgarh police), E-30 (a unit of the district police), CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action – an elite unit of the CRPF) and other state police units are involved in the operation. Intermittent exchange of fire is still underway,” the IGP stated in his report to the press.

“Ten Maoists, including senior cadres, have been gunned down so far,” the IGP said, adding that further details were awaited as the operation was still underway.

The IGP declared in his report that Modem Balakrishna, a Central Committee Member (CCM) of the CPI (Maoist), was likely to have been killed in the gun battle.

In conclusion, the IGP stated that Balakrishna, also known by his aliases Balanna, Ramachander and Bhaskar, was the Secretary of the Maoist party’s Odisha State Committee (OSC) and had joined the Maoist movement in early 1980s.
