We are writing to you from Syria to share with you the reality that we are living on the ground and our concerns about the earthquake that hit the region. This terrible catastrophe has added chaos to an already catastrophic geopolitical situation.
It is important to highlight some aspects of the situation in order to understand what is happening here.
The Syrian and Turkish regimes are using the tragedy that has struck thousands of people to place their pawns on the geopolitical chessboard. In Turkey the AKP MHP government is using the current crisis to campaign for elections and to suppress once again dissenting voices. The setting up of a hotline to denounce those who criticize the inability of the state to help its population is the most disgusting example. The blocking of twitter in Turkey illustrates this constant will to muzzle the population.
It seems to us also necessary to recall that the affected populations, whether on Syrian or Turkish territory, are mostly Kurdish. Therefore, the negligence of the states with regard to construction standards must be denounced (especially after the many corruption scandals in the real estate industry that have splashed the AKP MHP government).
