In India, around 10,000 people gathered to pay tribute to the revolutionary leader and member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), Paka Hanumanthu, known in the revolutionary movement as Comrade Ganesh Uike. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Pullemla, in the district of Nalgonda, state of Telangana, on December 28.
Uike was reportedly killed on December 25 in an offensive by India’s state forces in the forests of Odisha, between Kandhamal and Ganjam. Five other revolutionaries were martyred with him, including two women.
Comrade Ganesh, 69, joined the armed movement in 1982. As a member of the Central Committee, he was recognized as a steadfast cadre and a symbol of determination in the struggle against the oppressive state.
In the speeches delivered during the funeral, democratic organizations and progressive parties condemned the state for its brutal attack against the Indian people. They also highlighted Uike’s long service to the Maoist movement and his “tireless resolve” against oppression and for the rights of the rural poor.
The Comrade Ganesh Uike’s funeral is a massive demonstration of mass support for the revolutionary movement in India and as a protest against the Modi regime’s military campaign—the Kagaar operation that began in 2024. March participants waved red flags while carrying the coffin of the communist leader, shouting “Ganesh Amar Rahe!” (Ganesh is immortal!) and “Lal Salaam!” (Red salute!).
