Trump and Petro with the War – ELN

The government of President Petro has decided to give in to the orders of the United States empire and put itself at the service of the neo-colonial attack led by Donald Trump. The policies of peace and change in favor of the majorities have been terminally injured; because with the growing militarization by the government, there can be no talk of peace or overcoming the conflict, much less handing over national sovereignty to a genocidal empire.

On February 2, we received an emissary from the president along with a delegation from the International Community and the Colombian Episcopal Conference, to talk about the possibility of resuming the political solution to the conflict, in which we ratified our will for peace and the willingness to continue looking for solutions to the crisis of the Dialogue Table.

After the death rattle of the meeting with Trump, in the early hours of February 4, Petro ordered the state Armed Forces to bomb the same area of Catatumbo, where hours before the meeting that attempted to remake the peace process with the ELN had ended.

The seriousness of what happened is not that Petro had ordered war actions, but that they denied the peace alternatives that were underway and that he himself had authorized. Without a doubt, the President preferred to carry out military operations against the ELN, prioritizing the protection of the Banda del 33 of the ex-Farc, with which he maintains a long-standing alliance in the territory, without caring that bombing populated areas is a violation of International Humanitarian Law.

With these actions, the President denies what was advanced by his emissary and leaves the peace management carried out by the International Community and the Church completely questioned. Although there is incoherence from Petro, before the country and the world, the ELN ratifies the will for peace expressed in the meeting on February 2.

Until the next government arrives, we will continue to dialogue with society, popular organizations and communities to advance towards the construction of the National Agreement that we have proposed to the country.
