Protesters set fire to the house of Libyan unity prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeidé overnight from Sunday to Monday and stormed the headquarters of the foreign ministry. Protesters wrote “Down with the government of traitors” on the walls of the ministry’s headquarters, while gunshots were heard inside the building. Demonstrations were also reported in other cities outside of Tripoli and roads were blocked.
These protests and others erupted in the country, after the foreign minister met in Italy with his Israeli counterpart, when relations between the two countries are non-existent. Libya does not recognize the State of Israel and is a historical ally of the Palestinian cause. The Libyan Prime Minister announced the suspension of the functions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
