Philippines: Deadly Battles Against Maoist Guerrillas

Eight suspected communist guerrillas and a policeman have been killed in two separate shootouts in the central Philippines in less than a week. The latest clash broke out shortly before 7 a.m. this Friday in Campagao, a village in Bilar, on the island of Bohol, when troops from the 47th Infantry Battalion and police clashed with guerrillas from the New People’s Army (NPA).

A joint army-police detachment had been sent to the area to capture Domingo Jaspe Compoc (also known as Silong), a leader of the local branch of the NPA for whom a reward of 2.6 million pesos (US$46,500) was being offered.

On Wednesday, three NPA guerrillas were killed in the hinterland of Escalante, in the province of Negros Occidental. The confrontation lasted into the following day.
