Jon Mirena San Pedro, Basque Political Prisoner, Free After 30 Years in Detention

Jon Mirena San Pedro, a Basque political prisoner, has been released after 30 years in prison. Originally from the Deusto district of Bilbao, he has been imprisoned several times by France and the Spanish state. He was first detained in Spain, between 1991 and 1995, in pre-trial detention and accused of being a member of the ETA command in Biscay. He then fled and was arrested in France in 1999 and sentenced to an additional five years in prison. After serving his sentence in 2004, he was handed over to the Spanish authorities and has since been detained in various prisons. He should have been released a long time ago if the European criterion, which required the deduction of prison sentences handed down in other countries, had been applied.
