Chile: Transfer of Mauricio Hernández Norambuena Following the Deterioration of His Health

On Wednesday, June 25, Mauricio Hernández Norambuena, a former member of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), was transferred to the Santiago Sur Pre-Trial Detention Center after a long stay at the Rancagua Penitentiary Hospital due to a serious health problem. Known as “Commander Ramiro”, he is 67 years old and lost 4 kilos suddenly after showing symptoms such as fever, sweating, fatigue, intense muscle pain and cramps. He is subject to strict security measures and is constantly monitored by three agents, in particular because he participated in the “Escape of the Century” of 30 December 1996, which deeply traumatized the Chilean authorities.

Hernández Norambuena’s family issued a statement expressing concern about the symptoms he has been showing for weeks and criticizing the lack of information provided by the authorities. The transfer took place a few days after this warning. At the same time, several demonstrations were organized to demand the release of the internationalist activist sentenced to several decades in prison in Brazil and Chile.
