Riots have continued to erupt in many countries around the world over the past month, while new countries are entering the cycle of uprisings and clashes with authority, governments and their uniformed protectors. In France, the clashes between police and demonstrators that erupted in the French capital and many other cities during the strike against the austerity policies proposed by the administration of Emmanuel Macron, continue. After the appeal of the trade unions for a day of demonstrations against budget cuts, over a million workers took to the streets in the greatest mobilization since last year’s battle against the reform of the pension system.
Last week in Manila, capital of the Philippines, clashes between protesters and police broke out when thousands of people took to the streets to protest about one of the most serious corruption scandals in the country in recent years. The rage followed complaints of extensive corruption, the pillaging of the economy and bribes to politicians concerning government infrastructure projects to combat flooding, worth many billions of dollars, which were accompanied by huge scams, greed and political favoritism. The media reported the arrest of over 100 people and the injury of dozens of police officers, while on the internet there were numerous videos showing the violent actions of the police against the protesters.
In Italy thousands of people, under the slogan “Lets block everything”, came out into the streets in 90 Italian cities last week to denounce the genocide of the Palestinian people and the Italian government’s complicity in it. In some demonstrations clashes broke out with police when they tried to prevent the blocking of highways, railway stations and ports. The general strike in support of the people of the Gaza strip and the Global Sumud flotilla was declared by all the main unions, the Unione Sindacale di Base. All the branches participated, from public transport to the railways, from schools to the health care system. In Livorno, dockworkers and other groups occupied the port for three consecutive days, preventing the US ship SLNC Severn from mooring, which was carrying vehicles and trucks for a US military base in Pisa. In Taranto, dockworkers and other groups prevented the Seasalvia oil tanker from mooring, as it was waiting in the port to load 30,000 tons of crude oil for the Israeli air force. In Ravenna, the dockworkers identified and prevented containers filled with weapons intended for the Israeli army from loading. In Trieste, dockworkers have been striking against the mooring of MSc Melani III, which was carrying weapons and war material intended for the Israeli army. In Genoa, dockworkers and other groups demonstrated outside the town hall against the mooring of a ship loaded with steel intended for military use in Israel the following days. CALP dockworkers prevented the loading of war material on to the Zim New Zealand ship, occupying the Spinelli terminal and declaring an immediate strike. In the evening, a march with over 25,000 participants went through the city. In Salerno, dockworkers and unions stated that workers would refuse to handle loads intended for war. In Padua, thousands of people participated in the demonstration, occupying the regional road. In Turin, thousands of people clashed with police while trying to get to the airport. In Brescia, over 10,000 people occupied the ring road heading to the headquarters of Leonardo Spa, the top weapons manufacturer in the European Union. In Vicenza, protesters blocked first the regional road and then headed to Caserma Ederle, a symbol of the US military presence.
In La Spezia, thousands of people demonstrated against the Seafuture arms exhibition, occupying Piazza Chiodo in front of the military arsenal.
In Ecuador’s Quito, from last week thousands of people have taken to the streets for days on end to protest, blocking the country’s main transport hubs and clashing with police and military forces as protests broke out against rises in oil prices after the government’s decision to end fuel subsidies. A protester was murdered, 12 soldiers were captured and 17 were injured after an ambush by protesters. 46 year old Ephraine Fuerez, of the indigenous community, “was shot three times” and died at Kotakatsi Hospital, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Quito. Social and indigenous organizations in Ecuador expressed their rejection of the presidential decree and decided to call for an immediate indefinite national strike after the latest measure of right-wing President Daniel Nomboa. In his 35th year, Daniel Nomboa, heir and massively rich son of billionaire Alvaro Nomboa, became the youngest president to be elected in the history of Ecuador. The measures announced had a direct impact on fuel prices, that increased up to 56%, which, in combination with other measures applied by Nomboa such as increasing VAT from 12% to 15%, led to the anger of various social groups and labour sectors. The Nomboa government reacted by declaring a state of emergency for 60 days and warning of arrests of those blocking the road arteries and violating the restrictions imposed.
In the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo, clashes broke out on Friday between protesters, police and military units as thousands of people took to the streets to protest and were attacked by the police with live fire, tear gas and plastic bullets. Protesters set up barricades with stones and burning tyres and attacked the residences of three politicians known to be close associates of president Andry Rajoelina. Five protesters were killed and an unknown number were injured. The precise number of those arrested is also unknown. The protests, that started from the demand to end the tactical interruption of water and electricity that was hitting the capital several hours per day, have turned into a voice of condemnation of institutional corruption, lack of rights and the extreme poverty in which people are living in Madagascar. Demonstrations were also held in other cities, such as Antsirabe, the country’s third largestcity, and Antsiranana, an important port in the northern part of the island.
In Lima, Peru, clashes broke out for the second consecutive day between protesters and police during a protest against corruption in parliament and the policies of the president Dina Boluarte. At least
50 people were arrested. The protesters are complaining about the reform of the pension system that the government voted on September 5, about state corruption, while denouncing the “criminal penetration into the police”.
Over recent months in Peru there has been unrest powered by a series of organized crime cases and extortion with a state aroma. Most people consider the government and the conservative congress corrupt. Protests intensified this week after voting in by the legislative body of a law forcing young adults to join a private pension fund, despite the fact that many of them face unsafe working conditions. Clashes on Saturday, which took place near the buildings of the presidency and parliament, were some of the most violent in Peru this year. About 450 protesters participated in Saturday’s riots, which also caused damage to public roads, according to police. 6 protesters and 12 cops were injured. Pictures of demonstrators injured by projectiles allegedly launched by police were released on the internet. As night fell on Sunday, groups of protesters threw stones and molotovs against the police, which responded with the use of tear gas.
About our matters now: on Sunday afternoon in dozens of cities around the country coordinated rallies and protests held in favour of hungerstriker Panos Routsi and his supporters and against the government’s efforts to conceal the state capitalist crime at Tempi. Dynamic slogans and anger were their main characteristics, but people’s participation was far from the unprecedented massive protests of February. Panos Routsi, father of Denis, who lost his life at Tempi, has gone on hunger-strike demanding a full investigation of the causes of his son’s death. In particular, he is demanding the approval of the judicial authorities for the exhumation of his body, as well as for conducting both a DNA examination as well as toxicological analysis.
