A demonstration was organised to commemorate the fallen Kurdish revolutionaries Bişeng Brûsk and Sara Hogir Riha in the northern Syrian city of Qamishlo on Wednesday. The deaths of Bişeng Brûsk and Sara Hogir Riha were announced by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) Youth Committee on Monday. According to the announcement, the two female guerrilla fighters were martyred on July 28, 2023 in an airstrike by the Turkish state in the Medya Defense Areas. Bişeng Brûsk was a member of the PKK Youth Committee and the Coordination of the Young Women’s Community (Komalên Jinên Ciwan), and Sara Hogir Riha was a member of the Young Women’s Community leadership. Both young women came from Bakur, in the north of Kurdistan, and were active in the youth movement in all parts of Kurdistan for many years.
In addition to youth activists, members of the PYD (Democratic Union Party) and the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) also took part in the demonstration in Qamişlo, which was organised by the Revolutionary Youth Movement of Syria and the Young Women’s Association.
The participants met at the Şerq intersection and staged a memorial march with banners and pictures of Bişeng Brûsk and Sara Hogir Riha to the Şehîd Delîl Saroxan cemetery. There, an audio recording was played in which the voices of the two women could be heard. Afterwards, Şêrhat Ehmed gave a speech on behalf of the Syrian Revolutionary Youth Movement. The activist paid tribute to Sara and Bişeng as leading militants of the liberation struggle and said: “They showed us the way and were a source of strength and morale for us. We promise to continue their struggle.”
The commemoration ended with the slogan “The martyrs are immortal, Sara and Bişeng are immortal!”.
