Ekin Rodi

Ekin Rodî was born in Amed and grew up in an environment close to the Kurdish liberation movement. Her uncle was in prison, and this circumstance shaped her childhood. When she later studied journalism at Marmara University, she became active in the Kurdish youth movement. In 2014, she joined the guerrillas in Amed.

During Ekin’s stay in the mountains of Amed, the Islamic State attacked Kurdistan. Ekin went to Kobanê and took part in the resistance. She had no military experience and was trained as a fighter during the war. The cooperative relationships between the fighters gave her the strength to withstand this difficult time. She went on the offensive in all battles and recognized that victory was only possible with sacrifice.

The HPG described Ekin Rodî as a staunch supporter of Abdullah Öcalan’s paradigm. She dealt intensively with the ideology of women’s liberation and defended these principles uncompromisingly. At her own persistent suggestion, she later went to the war zone in the Zap and took part in the tunnel resistance against the Turkish occupation. The HPG honors Ekin Rodî as a great militant who went down in Kurdistan’s history as a Newroz casualty.
