Comrades Confront TAE Police Station in Solidarity With Murdered Migrant from Bangladesh. 10 arrested, Two Wounded: Limassol, Cyprus

A protest took place in Limassol on Saturday, 13 April, 2024 concerning the death of a migrant worker from Bangladesh on Wednesday 17 April.

In a statement calling for a protest circulating on social media, it is mentioned that “the fact that migrants chose to risk their lives rather than be in the hands of the state shows us the treatment that migrants receive when they are in the hands of the state and how just the thought of being deported makes risking their lives a one-way street.”

“It is our duty to flood the streets, local people and migrants alike, to now demand the obvious, that they cannot play with our lives”, the statement continues.

“Saturday 12 noon we call for a commemorative meeting at the place where 19-year-old Anis was murdered, opposite the main building of the AHK, next to the church of Agia Napa in Limassol. This will be followed by a protest at the Limassol CID, the mechanism responsible for the murder of Anisur Rahman মো: আনিছুর রহমান, and the daily humiliation and abuse of so many other migrant workers” the statement concludes.

Early on Wednesday, officers from the Alien and Immigration Service arrived at an apartment on the fifth floor of a building in Limassol, acting on snitching about undocumented migrants living there.

The police raided the apartment to check for the occupants’ residence status. Two men, both foreign nationals, attempted to escape.

One migrant man jumped from a bedroom window, resulting in him falling onto the balcony of another apartment and dying…

The other migrant man jumped from the apartment balcony and landed on a balcony below, leading to severe injuries. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

On 27/04 after a march against the high rents in Limassol called by the assembly against the state murder of an immigrant worker by the Cypriot state, about 20 comrades headed outside the TAE Police station Limassol in solidarity with the arrested housemates of the murdered man. Almost immediately the repressve forces violently broke up the gathering, and after beatings and a chase they arrested 10 comrades, while 2 of them were taken to the hospital after their violent arrest.

The charges they face: Harassment, disorderly conduct, public indecency, assault on a police officer (for 4 of them), resisting lawful arrest, attempted escape and disturbing the peace.
As a minimal act of solidarity, we have hung a banner on the facade of the occupation in the Rectorate, and sprayed a wall in the Polytechnic University, during the reoccupation of the Self-Managed Place of the Polytechnic University of Crete.
