Yorelys Beltrán, Signatory of the FARC Peace Accord, Was Assassinated

The violence continues to intensify in the country, as week after week, the Colombian state strikes both social leaders and former fighters of the extinct FARC. On this occasion, there is a new case of murder against a signatory, the incident was recorded in the department of Antioquia, where a companion of the victim also died, who belonged to an indigenous community of that region.

The unfortunate event occurred in the municipality of Mutatá, located in the sub-region of Urabá. The victim was identified as Yorelis Antonio Beltrán Ramos, belonging to the new zone of reintegration of San José Leones, a settlement of the place.

Together with Beltrán, they found the body of Cristian Camilo Arboleda, an 18-year-old man belonging to the indigenous community of San José, an original group that lives in this incidence zone. The bodies were found on the road that leads from Mutata to Medellín, near a tollbooth under construction.

Intimidation and lack of security conditions was faced by ex-combatants in the former territorial space for training and reintegration of St. Lucia, Antioquia, which in 2020 was harassed by armed groups, a situation that led ex-combatants to leave this territory and later seek to settle in Mutatá. However, for some, the fear of a new victimization led them to abandon the process, delegitimizing the conditions agreed in Havana.

Another signatory was attacked in the area of Medellín del Ariari, the victim, a peace signatory Duberney Herrán in Granada, Meta is recovering.

Regarding social leaders, the latest case occurred in the municipality of Toro, north of the Valle, when the peasant leader and representative of the Municipal Committee of Coffee Producers of this jurisdiction, Luis Alfredo Castaño Gómez, was killed by armed men in the village of El Roble, a rural area of this place, becoming the 51st victim in 2022.

Indigenous and political leaders of the opposition, as well as former fighters of the FARC, have been systematically killed and threatened day after day, a situation that worries about the lack of effectiveness in the implementation of the Agreement in terms of guarantees for the former fighters and the social leaders of the territory themselves
