Actions in Solidarity with the Hunger Strike of Anarchist Prisoner Alfredo Cospito in Athens, Greece

CLAIM OF RESPONSIBILITY IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE HUNGER STRIKER ALFREDO COSPITO

In 2014, anarchist Alfredo Cospito was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison because at his trial for shooting the knees of the director of a nuclear power plant unit he did not make statements of repentance, but instead defended his action, an action ”against the doctrine of technology” according to his words. In 2016 and already in custody, he was sentenced to life without the possibility of a reduction of the sentence for good behaviour, accused of a bomb attack on a carabinieri school in Fossano in 2006. Since 5 May 2022, he has been in solitary confinement (41bis) as part of changes to the Italian Penitentiary Code.

This regime imposes a reduction of the prisoners’ excercise period to one hour a day and of visits with relatives to one hour a month, as well as restrictions on correspondence and possession of books. In these ways, it forces the inmates into complete social isolation. Similarly, with the re-establishment of C-type prisons, the amendments to 187 and 187A, the increase of the minimum sentence to 4/5 from 3/5, the frequent DNA-based prosecutions and other amendments to the penal code, it is clear that the treatment of Comrade Cospito is not so far from the standards of the Greek state. Besides, the cooperation between the two states is complemented by their economic support for each other. Of course, despite the apparent differences between them (with the image of the Greek state as more progressive and the Italian state as more conservative), it is obvious that the counter-revolutionary policy is the same regardless of the regime and government.

Throughout time, prisoners have used various means of struggle (uprisings, hunger and/or thirst strikes) against their confinement. In this context, comrade Cospito has been on hunger strike since October 20 against his detention regime (41bis). Being now in a very critical state of health, having lost a significant percentage of his initial weight and with a clear risk to his life, the court on 23/2 rejected his appeal and reconfirmed his continued confinement in this regime.

We stand against every state, every form of confinement, oppression and exploitation. For this reason, we consider it necessary to show our solidarity to anyone who refuses to be integrated into the world of power and through the multiform struggle chooses to resist it. Thus, for our part, with internationalist solidarity in mind, on the evening of Thursday 23/2, we chose to attack capitalist targets, whether of Italian origin or not, causing extensive damage to:

– an Elpedison store on Patision Street
– an ATM of Eurobank on Panormou Street
– a Piaggio car dealership
– a Benetton store in the area of Ilion
