Rural People in Colombia Push Back Against Energy Companies

On March 7 the communities of Sucre, affected by the repeated breaches of the CANACOL company protest and denounce roadblocks by this company seeking to delegitimize their mobilization.

Canacol is a natural gas exploration and production company with operations focused in Colombia.

Just a few days prior, indigenous and rural demonstrators holding scores of police and six employees of Emerald Energy to protest the oil company in southern Colombia released their captives.

During a protest against the company in the town of San Vicente del Caguan on Thursday, locals clashed with security forces.

A villager and a police officer were killed while protesters took 78 police and six employees of the oil company hostage.
