The demonstrators held up signs with the phrase “Not one more dead for fighting,” and questioned the head of government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta.
Social organizations and political movements in Argentina mobilized this Friday at the Obelisk in Buenos Aires, after the murder on Thursday of Facundo Molares Schoenfeld who died as a result of police violence.
“For justice and for the memory of Facundo Molares. Let anger become organization,” was one of the slogans launched by the Argentine militant collective Marabunta, who was present at the meeting.
Similarly, the demonstrators held up signs with the phrase: “Not one more dead for fighting,” and questioned the attitude of the head of government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, who claimed responsibility for the actions of the police, said that Facundo’s death was due to a heart attack.
For his part, the general secretary of the Central de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de la Argentina Autónoma (CTA Autónoma), Hugo Cachorro Godoy, said that “excessive repression of the mobilization” was responsible and that “the criminal attitude of the City Police is a message, a sad closing of Rodríguez Larreta’s campaign.”
Likewise, the Press Union of Buenos Aires (SiPreBa) and the Argentine Federation of Press Workers (Fatpren) were present, who had also shared from their social networks a statement from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ – Latin America and the Caribbean).
“Yesterday was a murder, regardless of how you want to say it. Those speeches of the extreme right to win votes are transformed into action, as we saw in Jujuy with the comrades, ” the assistant secretary Ricardo Peidro said.
“Did anyone warn Horacio Rodríguez Larreta that Facundo’s wife, to whom he gives condolences, is also detained by the police who killed Facundo? If violence is the limit, does this mean that the troops who beat and suffocated Facundo are already detained?” said activist Carina López Monja on the eve of the murder.
Meanwhile, the official statement of various social organizations stated that “the assembly for the rejection of the democratic farce carried out by the comrades of Popular Rebellion and MTR Votamos Luchar, was taking place on one side of the obelisk without any inconvenience when the enormous number of police present began to repress and detain militants.”
“Among those violent people they threw Facundo Molares to the ground, they squeezed him with his legs against the asphalt, they kick him, and they just release him, when a demonstrator who was filming them shouts at them to make them realize that he was no longer moving and everything was purple,” they stressed.
From his Twitter account, the candidate for the presidency of Argentina, Juan Grabois said on Thursday that “too much death, too much cruelty, too much violence; Let us not be indifferent to anyone’s life, let us not get used to it, let us not resign ourselves to this. Let’s be human again. My solidarity with the family and colleagues of Facundo, who died at the hands of the City Police.”
