The Unión Trabajadores de la Economía Popular (UTEP) and left-wing organizations mobilized this Monday in various regions of Argentina, to protest against the lack of food in canteens and soup kitchens.
In the capital, Buenos Aires, more than 500 pickets and demonstrations blocked access to the streets. However, the Minister of Public Security had put in place a special protocol to limit the impact of these actions, using extensive federal police resources. This protocol sometimes led to clashes between demonstrators and police.
Clashes took place mainly in Puente Saavedra and Puente Pueyrredón (CABA), two of the day’s main concentration points. In Avellaneda, on Avenida Mitre, a police cordon was set up to stop the advance of demonstrators marching towards the bridge with the intention of obstructing traffic.
As they tried to cross the cordon, a group of demonstrators began throwing stones at the police, who responded with tear gas. The confrontation ended in pushing and shoving. In Puente Saavedra, police advanced on demonstrators blocking Maipú Avenue on the Vicente López side and expelled them using pepper spray. The demonstrators responded by throwing stones at the police.
The political situation is explosive since Javier Milei was elected president and is threatening and actively implementing one of the most dracoian austerity regimes in the world.
