We have plenty of water, but there is none in Bogota, we export electricity, but the price of electricity is more expensive than ever… the fault is not Mother Earth’s, it is the disasters produced by the capitalist system, which devours natural resources without ceasing.
Climate disasters such as heat waves, floods, droughts, destruction of permafrost and cloud forests in the páramos, which are indispensable in the water cycle and from which more than 70 percent of the drinking water consumed in Colombia is produced, have increased.
Capitalism has led societies to revolve around excessive consumerism, which has caused hyper-industrialization, the excessive plundering of natural resources, and an excessive increase in the Carbon Footprint, which has led to the destruction of environmental biomes, the mass extinction of species of fauna and flora, and the deoxygenation of seas and oceans, among others. The bad guy in this horror movie is the greed of capitalism, which only seeks to generate large financial capital for a plutocratic minority group.
In the midst of this environmental crisis it is evident that Climate Change is not a cause that generates degradation, but a consequence of the capitalist model, therefore, to mitigate it and stop the environmental debacle, requires structural changes, such as changing the current economic paradigm, to generate one that favors the environment and the communities that inhabit this planet; transforming the production model, to develop one that meets the needs of the people and stop pursuing the excessive profit of super millionaires.
A change in economic policies and a true environmental policy that safeguards nature, a new model that focuses on environmental preservation as a strategic axis in harmony with the productive system cannot be postponed; of course this change is not easy, since it implies breaking with the old regime, which among other means, uses the Congress rented to the mega-businessmen to legislate in their favor; consequently, the protection of the environment and our subsistence depends on the unity and massive popular struggle around the defense of the planet and life.
