Major Setback for Guerrilla Movement in India

Twenty nine Maoist fighters, including fifteen women, were killed by security forces Tuesday in the Bastar area of Chhattisgarh, one of the strongholds of the Naxalite movement.

On the evening of 15 April, the anti-guerrilla paramilitaries of the DRG (District Reserve Guards) and the BSF (Border Security Force) launched their operation on the basis of reports of movements of Maoist fighters in Binagunda and adjacent areas.

They were able to locate a camp occupied by guerrillas since April 5th. A team of about 200 paramilitaries travelled 25 km of the hilly terrain of Abujhmad in the middle of the night. The march took them to Kalpar Hill, where they managed to encircle 29 Maoists, including two members of the divisional committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

All Maoists were killed by paramilitaries, with only three wounded. This operation decimated the Partapur Regional Committee of the ICP(M). Among the dead were Shankar Rao (photo) and Lalita, who were members of the CPI (Maoist) divisional committee.
