Crucial Court Hearing for Miguel Peralta Scheduled for June 19th

Call for solidarity for the unconditional freedom of Indigenous anarchist Miguel Peralta.

To the people and organizations who have shown their solidarity in the demand for the unconditional freedom of Miguel Angel Peralta Betanzos, Indigenous Mazatec from the community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón, Oaxaca.

We thank you all for the nearly ten years that you’ve accompanied Miguel and his family in the struggle for justice and freedom at every level of the judicial system arriving now at the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

We want to share with you all that next Wednesday, June 19, 2024, there will be a hearing to discuss the appeal 6535/2023, where justices of the First Chamber of the Supreme Court must consider the cultural specificities of the Indigenous Mazatec community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón, and of Miguel Angel Peralta Betanzos, as they relate to his ongoing criminalization.

The supreme court justices can put an end once and for all to the prolonged political persecution of Miguel and other members of the Mazatec community, as well as the psychological, sociocultural, and physical consequences of the ongoing torture carried out for more than ten years against Miguel, his family, and the community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón.

It is in the hands of the supreme court justices to resolve the appeal after nearly a decade of individual and collective injustice to allow the reweaving of the community fabric without arbitrary interventions from the criminal justice system.

For that, we invite everyone once again to show their solidarity with Miguel, demanding the Supreme Court carry out their supposed duty of guaranteeing access to justice for Indigenous peoples and communities, to avoid the criminalization of land defenders, and to respect the rights of self-determination and autonomous development.

We also invite everyone to accompany us for a press conference Wednesday, June 12, at 11:00am in the Casa de Solidaridad at Patricio Sanz 449, Colonia del Valle Norte, Benito Juarez, Mexico City.

We call for the appeal to be resolved in accordance with the constitutional and international normative human rights frameworks with an intercultural perspective, in order to put an end to the 50-year sentence imposed on Miguel for defending his self-determination and territory.

End the political persecution against the community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón!

Unconditional freedom for Miguel Peralta, Alfredo Bolaños, Fernando Gavito, and Francisco Duran!
