The Final Destruction of Exarcheia Square Has Begun: Athens, Greece

Recently trucks have been unloading concrete bases at the Exarchia square construction site. They are the bases that will support the new sheets of the construction site extension. This development suffocates the streets around the square in a continuation of the general plan of desertification and gentrification of the neighbourhood of Exarcheia.

For the square, this means further occupation of the public space, cutting off from the world its minimal remaining free space as a meeting and socializing point. Around the now larger construction site the police presence will be more intense and suffocating, making it even more difficult to hold gatherings, events and political coming together in general.

This new attack on Exarchia square is not an event that should be treated as something isolated. It is part of the overall state-investor war on the region, waged through policing, commercialisation and tourism. We already count innumerable air-bnbs which, combined with the leaping rents, are displacing the world of the neighbourhood and turning it into a fun and sterile tourist resort.

In fact, their goal is to change the character of Exarcheia and drive out the world of struggle that for years has gathered there and resisted oppression, state repression, police violence, the plans of the state, of capital, of the interests of every of power and who has always stood in solidarity with refugees, immigrant women, political prisoners and all variations of the oppressed class.

Despite violent gentrification, state terrorism, the presence of police and security guards on every corner, and the constant occupation of public space, Exarcheia continues to fight to remain a neighbourhood of resistance and solidarity!

On the day that the construction site expansion works will begin, we call for a gathering at Tsamadou and Exarcheia Square at 7:00 p.m. A neighbourhood demonstration will follow. After the end of the march, an extraordinary meeting will be held to organize reflective actions.
