ELN Guerrillas Held a Military Parade Inside the National University

Guerrillas from the National Liberation Army (ELN) occupied Che Guevara Square of the National University, the countrys main university, on May 20. They held a rally, unfurled a flag from a rooftop, fired into the air and detonated an explosive.

Under an ELN flag, the guerrillas, armed with semi-automatic rifles and pistols, stopped while their leader delivered a speech to the university students.

He spoke about the murder of university students by the Colombian Army in 1984, about the upcoming elections, paramilitary activity in Colombia, and the need for class struggle against the bourgeoisie.
When he said it was necessary to take up arms, another masked guerrilla fired two shots into the air with his pistol.

At the end of the speech, the guerrillas dropped a homemade bomb in the center of the square and ran away.

Students at the university said it was the first time they could recall gunmen entering the building.
