Turkey: Communist Released After 41 Years in Prison

Reşat Güvenilir was released on April 23 from Tekirdağ Prison after approximately 30 years of continuous incarceration, totaling 41 years since his initial imprisonment during the 1980 coup attempt in Turkey. He was accused of being a member of the TKEP (Communist Labour Party of Turkey). He was greeted by his family and supporters upon his release. His case involved several legal proceedings and a conviction for membership in an armed organization, the TKEP/L (Communist Labour Party of Turkey/Leninist). This conviction was challenged before the European Court of Human Rights, which concluded in 2009 that there had been a violation of his right to a fair trial, particularly due to the lack of legal assistance. Despite a review process in Turkey, the national courts upheld the conviction in this now emblematic case.
