Spain: Release of María José Baños, Veteran GRAPO Militant

María José Baños, a 61-year-old veteran activist with the Antifascist Resistance Groups of the First of October (GRAPO), was released from Campos del Río prison (Murcia) on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Her release, secured thanks to her determination and a broad mobilization of support, comes as she suffers from serious health conditions. Imprisoned since November 18, 1992, she was serving a sentence of 35 years, 14 months, and 17 days for her participation in various GRAPO actions and had been transferred to the Murcia prison in 2021 from Valencia. Her release, validated by the Juzgado Central de Vigilancia Penitenciaria de l’Audiencia Nacional, follows a third-degree classification initiated by the prison administration and has benefited from the support of numerous organizations as well as various political prisoners and public figures such as Javier Bardem, Luis Tosar and Willy Toledo.
