A Short Report on Indonesian Squatting by Anarchist Comrades in Borneo

The Space Occupation (Okupasi Ruang also known as temporary squatting or autonomous zone) was organized by comrades in Pontianak (Borneo Island) in the agenda of Citizen Solidarity Against Evictions that occurred in various regions of the archipelago, we realize that this is not the first time citizens have to experience violence and deal with the tools of the State. Therefore, we call for building a more massive solidarity force, even more massively.

The Space Occupation took place in an empty building on the banks of the Kapuas River. We organized gigs, documentary film screenings and discussions related to evictions and deprivation of living space. We also make zines as a medium to distribute information. For information, in other areas of our region there are indigenous peoples in Kualan Hilir, Ketapang who have also been criminalized by PT Mayawana Persada. They seized farmers’ land, displaced rubber plants and fruit orchards belonging to the community, and according to reports received from friends involved in advocacy in the field, the residents’ granaries were burned. Departing from this, as an output from the results of yesterday’s discussion, we together with several friends involved initiated to form a reportage published in the zine, maybe not in the near future but we will try.

We also do not forget the comrades who are behind bars

For citizens who are struggling to maintain the sovereignty of their land

For all class war prisoners

For anarchist comrades imprisoned around the world

If every place is a fire, let us burn it together!
