The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, released new footage on Friday documenting the life and military career of Hamza Hisham Amer, widely known as the ‘Elegant Fighter’, as part of its ongoing documentary series “Moons of the Flood”, which commemorates commanders and fighters killed during Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.
The video identifies Amer as a platoon commander in the Musab bin Umair Battalion of the Khan Yunis Brigade and chronicles his role before and during the Al-Aqsa Flood operation.
Amer became widely recognized in late January 2024 after appearing in a Qassam video that circulated extensively on social media.
The footage showed him wearing a long black coat and white sneakers while carrying a Yassin-105 anti-armor launcher and firing at an Israeli military vehicle during fighting in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza.
The distinctive image earned him the nickname ‘The Elegant Fighter’, which has since become closely associated with his battlefield appearance.
Training, Combat and Leadership
The newly released footage documents multiple stages of Amer’s military career.
It shows him supervising the training of Qassam fighters, participating in live-fire exercises before the launch of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation, and directing anti-tank missile teams during combat in Khan Yunis.
One sequence shows Amer with a bandaged head after being wounded during the fighting, while others depict fighters maneuvering through destroyed neighborhoods and engaging Israeli military vehicles with anti-armor weapons.
According to the Qassam Brigades, Amer was born in 1991 and was killed on March 1, 2024, after serving as a platoon commander within the Khan Yunis Brigade.
Final Testament
The Brigades also released Amer’s recorded final testament.
In the video, he urges his family to remain steadfast, uphold their commitments, and raise future generations according to the teachings of the Quran while maintaining close ties to their local mosques.
Hamza Amer was the son of Hisham Hosni Amer, a senior Qassam figure who was killed during the First Intifada in 1992 while carrying out an armed operation targeting the Khan Yunis police station, which was being used by Israeli occupation forces at the time.
The Qassam Brigades presented Hamza’s story as a continuation of his father’s path within the Palestinian resistance movement.
